Sean Grass Gives Lecture on Dickens at New York Public LibraryIn November, Sean Grass gave an invited lecture on Charles Dickens as part of the New York Public Library's ongoing celebration of the bicentennial of the famous author's birth. On November 6, 2012, Sean Grass gave the address "The Worst Dickens Ever: Our Mutual Friend" as part of the lecture series accompanying the New York Public Library's bicentennial celebration, "Charles Dickens: The Key to Character." Working from material he discovered while researching his forthcoming book Charles Dickens's Our Mutual Friend: A Publishing History, Grass discussed Henry James's low critical opinion of the novel but pointed out that--though James's criticism is well known--very few critica of the time actually shared his distaste for the book. Streaming video of Grass's presentation is available here http://www.nypl.org/audiovideo/worst-dickens-ever-our-mutual-friend and will be preserved as part of the New York Public Library's permanent archive of the bicentennial exhibit and events.
