Rebecca Burnett receives Jay R. Gould Award

Rebecca E. Burnett

University Professor Rebecca Burnett has been named a recipient of the 2005 Jay R. Gould Award for Excellence in Teaching Technical Communication by the Society for Technical Communication.

The Society for Technical Communication has more than 20,000 members and 135 chapters world-wide. The Jay R. Gould Award "honors excellence in teaching that becomes true academic mentorship: the personal and professional concern that the best teachers extend to their students beyond the demands of the classroom and beyond even graduation as former students continue to grow throughout their professional careers."

Professor Burnett frequently collaborates with students on conference presentations, journal articles and book chapters, and has an estimable record of arranging or coordinating additional publication opportunities for graduate students, and occasionally for undergraduate students as well. She edited the Journal of Business & Technical Communication for five years, which also entailed a mentoring function as she advised authors about improving their submissions, a courtesy she routinely extended even to authors whose articles were rejected.

Her scholarly interests are many and various, including collaboration and teamwork, communication across the curriculum, communication pedagogy, and risk communication, among other topics. The author of numerous journal articles, Professor Burnett is best known for her highly regarded textbook Technical Communication, currently in a sixth edition.
