Fellowships and Assistantships Available to MFA Program Applicants

Information on the Pearl Hogrefe Fellowship in Creative Writing and Teaching Assistantships available to prospective students.

Pearl Hogrefe Fellowship in Creative Writing -- Application Deadline: January 5

Applicants to the Hogrefe Fellowship may major in any field at Iowa State University. However, the fellowship is designed for students interested in creative writing. Fellowship holders are required to take a minimum of six semester credits of graduate work in Creative Writing during the fellowship year. Normally, the six credits are met through one three-hour Creative Writing course per semester.

The fellowship is granted for a nine-month academic year and currently carries a stipend of $1,350 per month, subject to the student maintaining satisfactory grades.  In addition, the fellowship will provide for payment of university tuition and fees during the fellowship year.

Teaching Assistantships -- Application Deadline: January 5

Assistantships are awarded to students on a competitive basis. These assistantships are usually available only to students who have been granted full or provisional admission to the Graduate College.  Students on restricted admission status may be eligible to hold assistantships, but such awards can be made only on a semester-by-semester basis.  Assistantships are not available to students on non-degree status.  Assistantships include monthly stipends for 9 months during the academic year (summer appointments are separate), tuition scholarships, and health insurance benefits.
