Journal of Business and Technical Communication

JBTC, a refereed journal founded in 1986 at Iowa State, serves as a forum for discussion of practices, problems, and trends in professional communication. JBTC primarily publishes article-length research studies but also features approaches and practices pieces, commentaries, book and software reviews, and comments and responses.

The Journal of Business and Technical Communication (JBTC), edited by David R. Russell, combines the perspectives of academe and industry. The journal's four yearly issues treat a number of theoretical and practical concerns:

Approaches to Business and Technical Communication

  • a balanced focus on context, cognition, discourse, and culture
  • presentation of various theoretical views (e.g., sociocognitive theory, social constructionism, genre theory, feminist theory, activity theory, speech act theory)

Empirical Research: Academe, Government, Industry, and Community

  • rigorous qualitative and quantitative research (e.g., historical studies, ethnographies, case studies, descriptive studies, surveys, corpus-based studies, experimental studies)
  • research exploring a range of issues in professional communication (e.g., ethics, culture of workplace communication, rhetorics of science/technology, multicultural and international issues, intellectual property, technological innovation)
  • developments in related fields (e.g., computer-supported cooperative work, design, engineering, marketing, cognitive psychology, public policy, law)

Innovative Instruction in Academe and Industry

  • consulting and in-service training programs
  • new developments in pedagogy (e.g., distance learning, computer laboratories)
  • internships and other liaisons between industry and academe

State-of-the-Art Communication Practices

  • developments in information design
  • impact of new technologies on professional communication (e.g., multimedia systems)
