Required Courses
The following courses are required to earn a Speech Communication degree. A total of 33 credits is required for the major.
Communication Studies
- ComSt 101: Introduction to Communication Theory (3 cr.)
Speech Communication
- SpCom 212: Fundamentals of Public Speaking (3 cr.)
- SpCom 305: Language, Thought and Action (3 cr.)
- SpCom 327: Persuasion (3 cr.)
- SpCom 412: Rhetorical Criticism (3 cr.)
- and a capstone course: either SpCom 497: Senior Seminar (3 cr.) or SpCom 404 Special Topics (3 cr.)
- Fifteen credits from Speech Communication courses.
Other Requirements
- Each course must carry a grade of 2.0 or better.
- Minimum of 21 credits of coursework at the 300 level or above.
- No credits in 290, 493, 499, and 590 may be applied toward the minimum 33 credits within the major.
- The Speech Communication English proficiency requirement is met by completion of Engl 150, 250 (or 250H), or its equivalent, with a grade in each of 2.0 or better;
- one additional writing course beyond Engl 150/250 with a grade of 2.0 or better from the following approved list: Engl 302-305, 309, 314, 415; Jl MC 201.
- Majors are limited to a maximum of 9 credits of 490 within the major toward graduation and used as electives.
