Undergraduate Programs Offered in the English Department

Information about the undergraduate degree programs offered in the English Department.

Undergraduate (in English)

BA in English, Emphasis in English Education
The English Education Program gives students the opportunity to qualify for a secondary teaching license from the Iowa Department of Education, and position themselves to earn extra teaching endorsements.

BA in English, Emphasis in Literature
Majors will develop their ability to analyze and interpret literary works as expressions of, and shaping forces in, culture. To this end, courses will focus extensively on situating literature within historical, theoretical, aesthetic, and social/political contexts.

BA in English, Emphasis in Rhetorical Studies
Majors will gain extensive experience with rhetoric and professional communication by choosing from among advanced courses in rhetoric; in business, scientific and technical, and argumentative writing.

BA in Speech Communication
Students in Speech Communication develop an understanding of communication theories, principles, and applications.

BS in Technical Communication
The undergraduate program in technical communication addresses the natural relationship between practical communication and science/technology.

Undergraduate (Interdisciplinary)

BA in Communication Studies
Students majoring in Communication Studies will learn about the theories, concepts and practices of human communication.

BA in Linguistics
Information about the three concentrations within the English major, in English Education, Literary Studies and Rhetorical Studies.
