Transfer Credit Evaluation

If you have previously taken a course similar to English 302 or English 314 at another institution or are planning to take a course at an institution other than ISU, you will need to get approval to use that course in place of a required 302 or 314 course at ISU.

Because standards imposed in some transferred courses may not meet those expected for ISU's English 302 and English 314, requests for approval of transfer credit are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. In evaluating each request, the Director of Advanced Communication compares to the requested ISU course

  • the course description and syllabi of the course requested for substitution,
  • prerequisites for that transferred course,
  • the student's grade in that course,
  • the student's papers in that course,
  • and ISU's Iowa Course Equivalency Guides pertaining to the student's program of study.  (These are available at http://www.admissions.iastate.edu/equiv/index.php.)

If your transferred course meets these criteria, it will be considered for transfer credit.

Students requesting a transfer credit evaluation for a course previously completed at another institution should complete a Request for Transfer Credit Evaluation form with their current adviser's assistance and contact Donna Kienzler, Director of Advanced Communication, at dkienzle@iastate.edu for an appointment.

Students considering taking a course at another institution while registered at ISU should inquire in advance about whether the course can be accepted for transfer. Students should provide information about the course they wish to take to Donna Kienzler, Director of Advanced Communication at dkienzle@iastate.edu. Each student will be advised by e-mail whether the course will be considered for transfer. After the student has taken the course and has earned a grade of "B" or better, he or she must complete a Request for a Department Review of Transfer Course form with his or her adviser and contact Dr. Kienzler to have the form signed.
