Accessing Classfiles from Macs

Synchronizing your NetID with Novell

At the beginning of your first semester teaching in our computer classrooms, you must change the password of your ISU Net-ID in order to synchronize it with the Novell server supporting the computer classrooms. To do so, follow these instructions.

  1. Login to the Acropolis Server at https://asw.iastate.edu/.
  2. Click on "Manage User"
  3. Choose "Change Your Password"
  4. Enter your old password and then your new password in the spaces provided.
  5. Click "Change password". Your password will be changed in a minute or so.
  6. To test your new password, use the test application that appears on the screen after you change your password.

NOTE: Your Net-ID password must be 5-15 characters in length and must contain two of the following: uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, or punctuation.

Accessing Your Novell Classfiles

  1. In the Computer Classroom, double click the classfiles icon on the desktop.
  2. In the logon window students enter xcourse and section number [for example, x3148], with x as the password, to access their classfiles.
  3. Instructors enter your FULL Novell user ID: yournetIDusername.faculty.engl.iastate.us. For example, my Novell ID is: jnoland.faculty.engl.iastate.us (Note that the final element is US not EDU].

Logging Off

NOTE: Save changes to any files before restarting!

  1. Pull down the Apple menu from the left top of the screen and select "Restart" from the menu. It is essential that you restart your machine between classes or those in subsequent classes will be able to access your files.

Accessing Classfiles from Your Office

Logging into Novell from your office is completely different from logging in from the classrooms because you do not have the automated launch icon installed on your desktop. Instead, you will be using the OS X connection feature to access the Novell server.

  1. Click any where on an exposed area of your Macintosh desktop to activate the OS X Finder.
  2. Under the Finder menu, navigate to Go=>Connect to Server.
  3. In the Server Address line of the Server Connection Window, type in the following address:
    >
afp://english.aitlabs.iastate.edu/ENGLISH.CLASSFILES
    >
Click on the Plus sign (+) to add this address to your Favorite Servers list so you won't have to type it again in the future.
  4. Click the "Connect" button to activate login dialogue box.
  5. Enter your full Novell user ID: yournetIDusername.faculty.engl.iastate.us. For example, my Novell ID is: jnoland.faculty.engl.iastate.us (Note that the final element is US not EDU].
  6. Then enter your password.
  7. Your Novell classfiles will be mounted on your desktop. Double-click to access all folders and files therein.
