Saving Files

If your students are unfamiliar with networked computers, saving files may seem complicated at first. However, once they become familiar with your class routine, they will have little difficulty saving their work on the lab server.

  1. With the file open in Word, select Save As in the File menu.
  2. Enter a name for the file.
  3. Suggestion: Have students include their last name and a number or key word in their file name, so you'll be able to see who has turned in an assignment without opening each individual file.

Note: Avoid file names which include an special characters; in fact, it's best to avoid all forms of punctuation.

  4. Select the appropriate folder for saving the file, using the buttons and scroll bar in the Save As window.
  5. Once the appropriate folder has been selected, click on the Save button once.
  6. To save a backup copy, on a storage disk or in another folder, select "Save As" again, select the new folder or disk, and click Save again.

NOTE: Roberts and Ross Mac Labs have Zip drives, but not floppy drives.

After making changes to a file, you must perform a separate "Save As" to update the original and the backup copy.
