Departmental Awards

A listing of graduate student academic awards given by the Department of English.

Application forms and/or additional information available at http://engl.iastate.edu/students/awards.html. (All applicants must be currently enrolled as students at ISU)

  • Pearl Hogrefe Grants-in-Aid for Creative Writing (Up to $250 each) - Graduate (any major). Criteria: Excellence and promise in creative writing. Current Hogrefe fellows cannot apply. Deadline: March 2, 2007.
  • Critical Writing Award (Varies up to $100) - Graduate or undergraduate (any major). Criteria: Excellence in critical writing as shown by an essay written for an ISU English class. Deadline: March 2, 2007.
  • W. Paul Jones Scholarship ($500) - Doctoral student in Rhetoric and Professional Communication; full-time student; has not completed the preliminary doctoral examination. Criteria: Scholarly excellence in rhetoric or professional communication as demonstrated by a paper written after admission to the ISU doctoral program in Rhetoric and Professional Communication. Deadline: March 2, 2007.
  • Aubrey Galyon Award ($700) - Undergraduate senior or M.A. student ready to begin work toward a Ph.D. in literature, linguistics, or rhetoric. Criteria: Academic excellence. Preference may be given to students with financial need. Deadline: March 2, 2007.
  • Quentin Johnson Award (Varies, approx. $100) - Graduate or undergraduate. Criteria: Academic excellence; interest in linguistics; preference for financial need. Deadline: March 2, 2007.
  • Albert L. Walker Excellence-in-English Awards ($400) - Graduate (any major). Criteria: Academic excellence; exceptional ability in the study of literature. Deadline: March 2, 2007.
  • Richard R. Wright Award ($200) - Graduate student. Criteria: Expository writing ability demonstrated by an essay written for an ISU graduate English class; preference for financial aid. Deadline: March 2, 2007.
  • Graduate College Teaching Excellence Award ($50) - Graduate student. No application form required. Criteria: Portfolio submitted with letter of nomination. Deadlines: mid-October, mid-March, and mid-June.
  • Graduate College Research Excellence Award ($50) - Graduate student. No application form required. Criteria: Copy of thesis or dissertation with letter of nomination from major professor. Must be cleared to graduate term of nomination. Deadlines: mid-October, mid-March, and mid-June.
