Community college teaching certificate

Certification courses and credits are ordinarily taken in addition to those required for any of the master’s degrees in the English Department. To be certified to teach in community colleges, students are encouraged to complete the Iowa State University Community College Teaching Certificate Program, a 12-credit program that includes the following courses:

  • Higher Education 561: College Teaching (3 cr.)
  • Higher Education 562: Curriculum Development in Colleges (3 cr.)
  • Higher Education 582: The Comprehensive Community College (3 cr.)

In addition, an approved undergraduate or graduate human relations course taken at any university or area education agency (3 cr.) must be completed before certification is received. At Iowa State University, Secondary Education 406 (Multicultural Gender-Fair Education), Higher Education 570H (Diversity in Higher Education), and Curriculum and Instruction 506 (Multicultural Gender-Fair Education in Curriculum Development and Instruction) meet the requirement. Certain English courses (including English 544: Multicultural U.S. Literatures) have also been approved on a case-by-case basis as a substitute for the human relations requirement. Community college teaching certification is processed through the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, N243 Lagomarcino (294-1241; edldrshp@iastate.edu).
