Graduate College English Language Requirements

The Graduate College requires students who are nonnative speakers of English to take or be exempted from the English Placement Test before their first semester. If these students are hired to work as teaching assistants, they must also take the SPEAK/TEACH test before beginning any teaching responsibilities.

English Placement Test

If you are a nonnative speaker of English, you must take or be exempted from the English Placement Test (as a graduate student) before your first semester unless you have received a degree from a U.S. institution. For more information on the English Placement Test and scores required to be exempt from taking the exam, consult the ESL Office, 102 Landscape Architecture, (515) 294-3568, englesl@iastate.edu or http://apling.public.iastate.edu/eptfaq.html.

SPEAK/TEACH Test

If English is not your first language and if you are a new teaching assistant, you must take the SPEAK/TEACH Test before beginning any teaching responsibilities. For more information, consult the SPEAK/TEACH Office, 1116 Pearson, (515) 294-1958, itas@iastate.edu or http://www.grad-college.iastate.edu/speakteach/.

All graduate students in the TESL/Applied Linguistics M.A. and the Applied Linguistics and Technology Ph.D. programs whose first language is not English are required to pass the SPEAK/TEACH Test as part of their program. To pass the SPEAK/TEACH test, students must receive a Level 1 pass and be fully certified. Check with your adviser or the SPEAK/TEACH Office for further information.
