If you are a graduate student from another major, you may obtain a graduate minor in an English department graduate major at the same or lower degree level as your major. To do so, you first need to find an English department Graduate Faculty member in the appropriate major to help you identify the required minor courses and to serve on your Academic Plan Committee.
That professor’s name and approval/signature, as well as that of the DOGE in the English department, are required when you submit the required forms and the Graduate College Academic Plan in your Workday account.

Available graduate minors
Applied Linguistics and Technology
A graduate minor at the PhD level requires 12 credits in English department courses not counting dissertation credits; 9 of these credits must be at the 5000-6000 level.
Creative Writing and the Environment
This program requires 12 credits in the English department’s creative writing courses at the graduate level (not counting thesis credits); 3 of these credits must be ENGL 5500: Craft and Professional Practice.

A graduate minor at the MA level requires 9 credits of English, 6 of which must be at the 5000 or 6000 level in the respective major.
Rhetoric and Professional Communication
A graduate minor at the MA level requires 9 credits of English, 6 of which must be at the 5000 or 6000 level in the respective major. A graduate minor at the PhD level requires 12 credits in English department courses not counting dissertation credits; 9 of these credits must be at the 5000-6000 level.
Teaching English as a Second Language/Applied Linguistics
A graduate minor at the MA level requires 9 credits of English, 6 of which must be at the 5000 or 6000 level in the respective major.
Linguistics (graduate minor only)
The graduate minor in Linguistics is offered through a cooperative agreement with the departments of Anthropology, Computer Science, English, World Languages and Cultures, Psychology, and the program in Speech Communication, and is individually tailored to the interests of the student, who consults with the linguistics Graduate Minor advisor.
- For the Master’s degree, a declared minor consists of 9 credits in linguistics. The courses must be approved by the linguistics graduate minor advisor to meet the degree requirements.
- For the PhD degree, the minor consists of 12 credits in linguistics. The courses must be approved by the linguistics graduate minor advisor to meet the degree requirements.
Students admitted to the MA program in Teaching English as a Second Language/Applied Linguistics (TESL/AL) are not eligible for a graduate minor in Linguistics.
Students with no prior background in linguistics may additionally need to take ENGL/LING 2190.
