Two LAS students demonstrated their superior debating skills at the first ever Mediacom Collegiate Invitational Debate over the weekend. Speech majors Kelly Erbes and Tim Overton went up against some of the states best collegiate debaters from five other Iowa schools. Erbes and Overton came home with convincing wins over teams from Drake University and Grinnell College, and a single, close loss to the team from Simpson College. For their efforts, Erbes and Overton were awarded sizable scholarships to Drake University Law School, provided they apply and meet entrance requirements. Ben Crosby, who coached Erbes and Overton and who teaches the debate and argumentation course on campus, stated: “Kelly and Tim came up with an exceptional case. They really kept their opponents on their toes. Iowa State should be very proud. Most of the other schools have formal debate programs. We don’t, yet we fielded one of the best teams there.” Mediacom plans to make this tournament an annual event.
