Director’s Letter

CATEGORIES: Foundation Courses

Dear all,

Lesley Erin Bartlett (Christopher Gannon/Iowa State University)

I have great news! Amy Walton, Brenna Dixon, and I were awarded a Miller Grant to lead the ISUComm Foundation Courses Redesign Institute, which will bring together instructors—term faculty, graduate students, and TTE faculty—this summer to collaboratively create and update assignments and learning activities for 150, 250, and 250H. I’ll send out a call for participants soon with more details about how to get involved.

If you think you might be interested in participating in the Redesign Institute, the first event to put on your calendar is Stuart Selber’s virtual talk, “Framing AI for Curriculum Reform,” which is Wednesday, April 17 from 1:10pm-2:00pm. If you can join us in Ross 212 to watch the talk together and chat about the Redesign Institute, please sign up here so we can provide lunch for you. You may come for lunch any time between 12:00pm and the beginning of the talk. You may also join on Zoom or watch the recording later. If you’re teaching ENGL 150 or 250 this semester, you will receive an Outlook invitation for this event from Amy Walton. Let me know if you want to attend the event but you aren’t teaching 150 or 250 this semester.

Finally, please join us on Wednesday, April 3 at 1:10pm in Ross 212 for this semester’s third brown bag session, “Revisiting Peer Review.” Peer review is an essential element of composition courses, but the practice can become rote unless instructors are intentional. Connor Ferguson, Amy Walton, and I will share strategies for framing and conducting peer review in your classes. We hope to see you there!

All best,

Lesley
