Eric York Prepares Professional Writers with AI Skills

Eric York began learning web development over 10 years ago and has since worked as a freelance developer, building his skills over time. He has always been interested in the intersection between technology and writing, which is why his current research is primarily focused on emerging artificial intelligence (AI) technology as it is used in writing. More specifically, he investigates AI as an application for professional writing and web design. York has also researched virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) in technical communication.

Currently, York teaches web development and user experience (UX) design in the TComm program. As York describes it, UX is all about designing with the user in mind rather than with a business interest. York uses a mix of qualitative and quantitative data in his research, characterizing his research as primarily driven by rhetorical methods. Most of the web development courses York teaches are at the graduate level. Plans are in motion to introduce these useful concepts and practices to undergraduate students so that TComm graduates can be more well-positioned to join the workforce.

On the topic of how AI can be used in education, York believes that AI is already having significant effects on professional industries as well as education and that this will only continue as the technology develops. “We will probably see the nature of work change. And we’ll probably see people with AI-related skills filling positions that formerly didn’t use AI, and workers who refuse to use AI will see a reduction in their positions in the workforce.” York isn’t saying AI will replace certain work, but rather that people who acquire AI skills will be able to outcompete those who don’t have such skills. With that in mind, York thinks it is in our best interest to learn and teach as much as possible about AI to prevent being left behind. “It is certainly not a replacement for professional communicators. It’s so full of errors and biases. It really takes a skilled operator to produce competent material.”

When asked if AI can help with UX design, York said he perceives AI in its current form to be a junior team member who may be good at coming up with ideas but requires expert oversight. As for the future, York thinks that AI models will improve and eventually be integrated with the interfaces we use today. Like how we use keyboards, mice, and touch to engage with a user interface, AI may be the next new tool that users can access.
