Allison Durazzi, a Phd candidate in Rhetoric and Professional Communication (RPC), won a scholarship from the American Copy Editors Society (ACES). Durazzi’s ongoing research examines how technical editors recognize and handle offensive language, aiming to identify strategies that can assist other editors in promoting inclusive editing practices.

Four annual prizes are awarded to students who are pursuing a career in editing and demonstrate exemplary skills. The ACES scholarship process is rigorous and involves a timed, written editing test as part of its many steps.

Her coursework led her to focus on editing. “RPC’s ENGL 5060 Professional Communication Theory class sparked my interest in technical editing research and my major professor, Jo Mackiewicz, has mentored me through teaching and researching technical editing,” Durazzi said.

Durazzi plans on using her scholarship to support he research. “The ACES scholarship will help with research expenses for my dissertation.”
