Dr. Jim Ranalli, assistant professor in the Department of English, is helping ISU students and faculty make the most of Grammarly, the online writing enhancement tool.

Iowa State began a one-year pilot of Grammarly in January 2020. All students and faculty can create a premium Grammarly account by following the instructions at MyCanvas Teacher or MyCanvas Student. The $57,000 pilot program is being funded by student technology fees approved last spring by CASTLE.

Dr. Ranalli’s research focuses on tools for automated writing evaluation, including Grammarly, as they are used by second language writers. He led pilot initiatives to integrate Grammarly into the ESL writing courses taught at ISU and to obtain a  funding a larger pilot of Grammarly in 17 different courses across seven departments in 2018-2019.

To support the rollout of Grammarly at ISU, Dr. Ranalli and his team are reaching out to students and faculty directly through social media and Canvas. They will also be trying to persuade instructors of any course that involves writing to incorporate it into their assessment plan.
