Welcome, current and future Cyclones!

The Department of English at Iowa State University offers a wide range of majors and minors to prepare students for exciting and rewarding careers. You can combine courses in creative writing, rhetoric, literature, and linguistics to make a degree program that best suits your interests. For example, you could take a group of classes related to film and screen writing or classes dealing with environmental literature and writing. If you like the idea of combining writing and science/technology or web design, our major in technical communication may be for you. Students in secondary education can also earn an ESL endorsement through classes in the English department.

    Take the next step in your academic and professional journey by pursuing a graduate degree. We offer advanced degrees in Creative Writing and Environment, English, TESL/Applied Linguistics, and Rhetoric, Composition, and Professional Communication. Take your education further with a Ph.D. in either Applied Linguistics and Technology or Rhetoric and Professional Communication. Earning a graduate degree will not only increase your academic and writing skills, but it will expand your future career opportunities.
