Assistantships

Assistantship support provides five years of funding for PhD students entering with an MA, three years for MFA students, and two years for MA students. Graduate students may also have assistantships in other academic and administrative areas on campus. Graduate assistants gain valuable experience teaching their own independent sections in our innovative and multi-modal ISUComm program, English as a second language programs, and the Speech Communication program. Teaching Assistants are aided by formal mentoring, a week-long orientation, and a proseminar devoted to pedagogical techniques and theory. All students hold graduate assistantship appointments are eligible for tuition scholarships and health insurance benefits.

Fellowships and Scholarships

The department has several resources available through which to offer fellowships and scholarships to qualifying new students admitted to our graduate programs.

Graduate Awards, Grants and Scholarships for Current Students

There are several types of awards, grants and scholarships available for current graduate students in the English Department.  The department accepts applications for awards and scholarships offered annually in the spring, service and leaderships awards are offered each academic semester, research grant proposals are accepted once a year in the fall semester, and the graduate programs nominate students each semester for Graduate College awards in order to recognize outstanding writing, research, and teaching.

Travel Support

The English Department may contribute funding to assist current graduate students with travel expenses associated with students presenting and attending conferences.

ISU Merit and P&S Employee Tuition Reimbursement

ISU employees in the Merit and Professional and Scientific (P&S) classification can apply for tuition reimburse according to policies set by ISU.
