On April 19, 2019, Deb Dimond Young (RPC) and her colleague Rachel Morgan received the Research-Based Project Award at the University of Northern Iowa Community Engagement Celebration Day for her project “Let Us Tell Your Story: Critical Service-Learning and Student Understanding of Audience.” Community Engagement Celebration Day is an annual event honoring all community engagement partnerships at UNI. Faculty, students, and staff are invited to submit community engagement projects, which are then judged by panels of independent jurors in seven categories. This year, 57 projects were presented at the event. Young won for a year-long mixed-methods study examining the use of service-learning pedagogy to teach core rhetorical concepts in first-year writing. The study is part of Young’s on-going research in the RPC program.
