Applied linguistics at the master’s level, with fall 2026 being my first semester, is an excellent opportunity to study how users, but also teachers and learners, explore language in settings impacted by current technology. Interests I hold in technology‑mediated language learning and human–LLM discourse grows out of preceding experience assisting researchers looking into presuppositions and rhetorical analysis.
Previous academic involvement I’ve had includes involvement in biweekly research groups for second‑language assessment and for corpus grammar, and I’m excited to join the Applied Linguistics research group for generative‑AI. Collaborative projects aimed at leveraging eye-tracking by first tagging rhetorical steps and aimed at identifying lexical presupposition triggers to train an LLM to analyze a chain of propositional arguments have offered a peek into how language interacts with technological tools in instructional contexts, refining my understanding of how teaching practices adapt at the edge of new methods and new machines.
A background in electronic systems offers me a kind of perspective on language‑technology. Long‑term goals of mine center on research supporting asylum seekers, refugee applicants, and individuals facing pragmatic‑communication challenges, to be accomplished through sustained academic collaboration and future creative scholarship molded by responsibility and attention to the human stakes behind linguistic inquiry.
