Information about the three concentrations within the English major, in English Education, Literary Studies and Rhetorical Studies.

Majoring in English
The Department of English at Iowa State University offers an English major with concentrations in literature; rhetoric and professional communication; and English education.
- English Education
These students take more than twenty hours of secondary education courses designed for teacher certification.
- Literary Studies
This option is designed to give students a broad knowledge of creative writing, literature, and related issues.
- Rhetorical Studies
Majors will gain extensive experience with rhetoric and professional communication by choosing from among advanced courses.
English Major Requirements
As an English major, you take, in addition to first-year composition, at least 39 credits in English.
Minoring in English
You can earn a minor by completing at least 18 credits in English courses beyond the 100-level (does not include English 150 & English 250).

English Major Core Requirements, 2007-09
All English majors take a common core of 24 credits plus a required introduction to the major and a capstone portfolio course, along with completing additional advanced study requirements for a selected program of study. Courses used to satisfy advanced study requirements cannot be used for the English major's core requirements detailed below.
