The awards were given in recognition of Nathan’s work as a teacher of 2120, Speech Communications as well as his broader contributions to the English department, broader ISU and Ames community, and outside the university. Along with fellow CWE MFA student, Liam Flake 27’, Nathan cofounded Death Cafe, a discussion group that meets the first Monday of every month at Dog Eared Books to discuss usually-stigmatized topics surrounding death.
Nathan’s other contributions came through his work with Ethics Bowl, a type of team-based philosophical debate centered around important contemporary issues like gene editing, organ donation, the electoral college, and animal personhood, among others. Nathan co-founded ISU’s undergraduate team with fellow CWE alumni, Kelli Fitzpatrick ’24 and serves as the team’s coach and org-president.
