Christina V. Cedillo is scheduled to give a research presentation on October 7th

Author: lskramer

Christina Cedillo will be presenting “Contesting Monstrous Representations: Latinx Multimodal Rhetorics of Resistance” on Wednesday, October 7, 2020.  Because of restrictions on large gatherings, her talk will be presented through Webex.

Christina V. Cedillo is an assistant professor of writing and rhetoric at the University of Houston-Clear Lake where she teaches first year and advanced writing courses and graduate Histories of Rhetoric, Rhetorical Theory, and Cultural Rhetorics courses at Ramsey Prison Unit. Her research examines embodied rhetorics and rhetorics of embodiment in the intersections of race, gender, and disability, and highlights these issues in the creation of critical inclusive pedagogies. Drawing on critical race theory, disability rhetorics, and decolonial theories, her work highlights rhetorical tropes and topics across time periods that expose how colonization and coloniality affect the lives of Latinxs.

Her current research focuses on Latinx, disabled, and undocumented activism in response to historical and contemporary rhetorics of dehumanization. This focus informs her monograph project, Embodying the Struggle: The Multimodal Rhetorics of Women of Color Activists, which examines the interactions of activists’ public speech and writing, embodied presence, and movement through space(s) to theorize new concepts for analyzing “marginalized multimodalities.”

Her writing has appeared in College Composition and Communication, Feminist Studies in Religion, Argumentation and Advocacy, Present Tense, and Composition Forum. She has publications forthcoming in Rhetoric Society Quarterly, Composition Studies, the Journal for the History of Rhetoric, and the edited collection Communities in Action: Creating Spaces of Social Change. She is also cofounder and lead editor of the Journal of Multimodal Rhetorics, an online, open-access venue dedicated to the study of multimodality in everyday life, particularly among marginalized communities and in commonplace contexts.

Cedillo is co-chair of the CCCC Latinx Caucus and Committee on Disability Issues in College Composition. Recently, she chaired the CCCC Disability in College Composition Travel Awards committee, and currently, she is a member of RSA’s Cheryl Geisler Mentorship Award committee.
